Very basic query. Excel is an application included in MS Office. Spreadsheet is a page / sheet of paper (normally there are 3 tabs, like sheet 1, sheet 2, sheet 3) and where you can work and it is an interface of excel with row/ columns. You have to read MS Office chapter minutely.

Excel is one of many spreadsheet programs. Microsoft sells Excel as part of it's Office products. Not only can Excel do spreadsheets it can do charts ans other graphical data. There are other spreadsheet programs like Lotus 1,2,3 (I know some who still use this) and the freeware OpenOffice. Is there anything specific you were looking for?

My son says because I can so easily (& quickly) set up TV programs that I want to see in the future, on the DVR, that I should be able to do Excel. Any opinions on that statement? I am trying to get back into the Office World and things are a little different now.

@NuNu512, if understood correctly, till date no smart TV has capability to show Excel/MS Office files directly on TV or DVR. One thing you can do, connect the TV to a computer and let the computer screen be mirrored on the TV.

Or extend Windows PC/laptop to a TV monitor/projector. This setup requires S Video cable/HDMI cable & other devices and accessories. Also some technical know-how is required. It may work, but one person is required to operate the computer.

Thank you for your reply but my question was much less “intelligent” as that. I just meant is the way you set DVR for copying shows anything like how excel is. I have never even seen excel!

@NuNu512: Excel is a lot more involved. Your DVR programming guide is using a table layout that some else designed for you. You basically just do selections. With Excel there is formatting of cells, formulas, calculations, sub totals, page layout, highlighting cells based on content. It's much more involved but still fairly easy to grasp once you start playing around with it.

Dvr-ms file extension is created by the Stream Buffer Engine or SBE which is controlled by the video/ audio elementary streams or simply video control. This is a very short dvr file concepts. For Excel you can link here, https://www.tutorialspoint.com/excel/index.htm

@NuNu512: Come back if you have any Excel questions. We are always glad to lend assistance in any way we can. If you have a copy you can always play around with it by creating catalogs of things like your music collection, DVDs, video games, Even things like a household budget will get you familiar with things like creating totals and maybe even formulas. Give it a try.
