From last few days I am facing this problem. When I shut down my Win 2000 Server(SP4) at the end of the day the end program-exlorer.exe dialog box comes up twice and it shuts down only after I click on the 2 end now buttons. Both end program dialog boxes are same and comes one after another. The whole shut down process takes around 5 minutes. It also takes a minute to show me the shut down dialog box after clicking on the shut down option. then the 2 end program dialog boxes comes up with end now buttons. I did not find anyother error message in event viewer. Please advise One more problem was there few days back...It was taking minutes to delete even small files/folders in windows explorer...but it is ok now. Any advice on this would be highly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Don’t know what might have caused this to start happening, but you should make sure you have updated antivirus and spyware protection. If so, do scans in safe mode.

Check your startup programs for anything non-standard. Use Startup Control Panel from www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml.

Check [HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop]
and change AutoEndTasks=1 to fix the symptom.

You could try deleting Explorer.Exe in the windows/winnt folder. This also happens when Explorer.exe itself gets corrupted. The process is : Start the server in the Command Prompt mode. Go to the folder Delete the file Restart windows. It will automatically recreate the Explorer.exe.

Why are you shutting down your server every night? When do you do backups of the data, run defrag. etc.? As for th ehang of EXPLORER.EXE, what changed before this happened? Was th emachine updated? Did you add an application to the server, if you are serving applications? Windows may be trying to shut down EXPLORER.EXE before all the programs dependent upon it have completely exited. If you have already replaced EXPLOERER.EXE as suggested by another reply, and it is still hanging, I'd start looking at it from this kind of angle. Steve//

Thanks to all for reply. This needs a couple of days observation as I have replaced explorer.exe. I will reply after that. Thanks again.
