Email password compromised

I have a gmail account. I gave my password to a friend. A week later I get a security alert from Google that an iPad user has changed my recovery phone number to my friends cell number. He doesn't own an iPad and claims he has no knowledge of who did this. Does this seem reasonable? Only my friend and I had my e-mail password.

Anything is possible nowadays it seems. If your friends PC was not safe and secure, he may have been hacked. I would have no reason to give anyone my email address. Why? You can set them up for free. Then just forward any emails they needed to see to their new email. This keeps yours secure. If they needed an email for verification, then have them set their own account up, they will need it again down the road.

After the alert, did you verify that the recovery number was changed? (And if it was, did you change it back?)

Is the recovery number truly changed? Have you checked it? Have you checked your email settings while you still have the password. Immediately you have to change password.

Yes, the recovery number was changed. Google sent me an alert telling me it had been changed. I did change the password.. My friend never received a Google alert saying he was hacked.

What password you changed? Is it mobile password or email password? As you mentioned your friend did not receive Google alert, then what happens on your phone?

If possible you may stop using phone for few days.
