Drive failed in RAID 5. Hotspare did not kick in.

One drive failed in a 6 drive raid 5 array. There was a hot spare but it did not kick in. It says offline. What needs to be done to return the array to full working condition? I would like a hot spare as well.

You need to verify the configuration in the array configuration software from the hardware vendor. Most providers supply a utiilty that can be used to revierw and configure the config, including hot spares.

    Did you configure the extra disk as a hot spare or did you assume that if it wasn't in the array it would be a hot spare? You have to specifically configure the disk to be a hot spare or nothing will happen with it.
