Do wireless clients communicate directly in a LAN?

I am transferring a file between two computers on my home LAN. Both computers are connected to my home network wirelessly and are 2 rooms apart. The wireless router is 2 floors above. Do these 2 computers communicate directly or are the packets relayed to the router? Would I need to set them up as an adhoc network for this to work? I assumed it would work like if they were both connected to a switch and the sending PC would address the frame directly to the receiving PC, but with wireless I'm not sure. Thank you.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

There packets will go via their wireless access point which in this case is your router – They will not be communicating directly.

If you want them to communicate directly you would need use Windows to create an Ad-hoc network but it is done through different methods depending on what version of Windows you are on.

Hope this helps.
