You can display the contents of a file a number of ways using command like DSPPFM, WRKQRY, STRDFU and SQL to name a few. Where do you want the file contents listed, to the screen or dumped to another file for use elsewhere? As for the message, what type of message and where is it to be displayed? More details are need if need some help.

    Display the contents to a screen, and for the message, i guess just a message sent to the screen to tell the user that a program has been executed. I'm learning CL so I am sorry for not knowing what type of message.

    If it is to display data the once it's displayed the program waits for another instruction or the user to close the screen and end the job. There should not be a need to send a message to the user as they would be the one ending the job. You can send a message to the user with the SNDUSRMSG or SNDBRKMSG.
