I'm able to open an Excel file (and it's not in read-only mode). But when I work on it and try to save it, I'm getting the read-only message. It's happening every single time that I'm sent a file. How can I stop this from happening?

It this problem with just one particular file or every Excel file? Have you looked at the file properties to see what the user authorizations are? Post back with the info and we can try and figure this out for you.

Are you the only user working on this computer?
Are you opening the files you created and saved?
Are you the admin on this computer?
Examine these pointers. Also, there should be a message at the time of opening a file if you are not the creator or admin.

Try this trick, if that helps you, open Excel, click File > Save As > Browse. Now click Tools > General Options. Now un-check the check box next to Read-only recommended. Click on OK, and then click on Save.

Is this a local file or on a shared network drive with others? If it is on a shared drive it may be read only to protect the integrity of the data. This would prevent multiple users open the file at the same time, making their changes and when updating it it would lose the changes made by another user.

Sometimes, an Excel file might be marked as 'Final'. That means, the file is made to read-only & the data on this file can't be edited. To edit this type of file, it is needed to click on Edit Anyway button to edit this document.
