What is the best way to send/receive a request via a data queue when data from an outside source is added to files on the AS/400? Physical file trigger added to one of the files?

Software/Hardware used:
AS/400, Sequel Server

That's likely what I'd do in that situation.

Agreed. That's the approach I have taken in the past.

We have several programs monitoring different data queues. We have RPG programs that use the 'QRCVDTAQ' API, note the wait time parameter. We have it set to a negative value, so it just sits there and waits until data is put into the queue.

We use the same method that azohawk mentioned. IT seems to work well for us.

Thanks for the feedback! It seems that the trigger is the best option in this scenario.

The question mentioned data queues. Our system code uses the extensively. We have about 30 jobs that run asynchronously and will process when data hits the DTAQ. We have started writing mobile apps that interface with our i-Series and for that process we do use PF triggers to run the jobs. It comes down to where is your data coming from as to what method may work best. You may only want the job to run once on demand instead of an async running constantly.

I just needed to know the best option to use to initiate the "send" data queue program once data is added to files on the AS/400 from an outside source. Currently, we have a CL program that runs every minute to check for data in these files.

A trigger will certainly beat a CL program looping on the file/table every time.
