Custom colors behind text in Microsoft Word

So I understand that Microsoft Word has different styles with colors behind the line of the text. Can I actually do this myself with custom colors? Would shading work for this? Thank you.

    Select the word/text that you want to apply shading to (as you mentioned). On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the arrow next to Shading. Under Theme Colors, click the color as your choice that you want to use to shade your selection.
