Creation of an app to interface with AS/400

AS 400
We have an AS/400 running our production line at our plant is expanding to a larger one. I get requests to print production tickets from the AS/400. I was wandering is there a way for me to create an APP to connect to the AS/400 via smart phone to be able to print from the plant floor and not have to run back to my Desk. Thank you!

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

If I understand you basically want to use your phone like a terminal to submit a print request from the floor. I also assume the printer are located on the floor as well. I suppose you could create an app for the phone as long as you have the staff that can handle the coding needed. We had a issue with inventory labels and tickets. We just got some scanners with a display screen that emulated the i-series.

We created our interface that called a custom program upon login. That was much easier, cheaper and quicker to develop.

There are several vendors who sell 5250 screen emulators for tablets. Might also work on a phone but would be hard to read.
Another option is IBM's i Access for the Web which renders AS/400 screens to a browser. I have not tried it from a phone. However, we have remote users who do this from a PC.

The simplest solution would be to install a terminal near the printer with a simple menu that only allows reprint requests. Make it the initial program when the user signs on so they cannot do anything but reprints.

If you're running V7R2, there is a web 5250 interface available that you should be able to use with your phone. You can http://youriSeriesIP:2011/iamobile/iWAHome
