Using AS/400, I copy over 300 times a day from the same field. How can I create a keyboard mapped key to highlight and copy the characters? The AS/400 program is set for a 3270 display if that makes a difference.

This seems to be the same as the question you asked a couple days ago. (Is it?)

There's a little more here, so it's possible to get closer to an answer. You say that you're using 3270, which is supported but very unusual. All 3270 emulators that I know of are capable of macros that would help automate what you describe. Can tell us what 3270 emulator you use?

BTW, it would have been better simply to add these details to your previous question.

Yes, my apologies I haven't submitted anything before. I do know it is capable of running macros. I am not sure where to find the type of emulator, under properties it shows MS-DOS name as CA_IBM.edp

Emulator name and version should be shown if you click an 'About...' element in a 'Help' menu bar item. From the .EDP extension, it might be EXTRA! from Attachmate, but version number is still nice.

Is the field always the same data or does it vary each time you are looking to copy it?

It is always an eleven character number, that changes per account I am looking at.

Where are you copying it to? If it's another AS/400 screen it might be better to modify the program to pass it as a parameter to the next screen. Especially if it is being done that often.
Not know the full extent of the need or the current program, I'm just making a suggestion.

It is a different program used to view client submissions.

I'm not sure if it can be done the way I understand. You are looking to copy data from an AS/400 screen, automatically switch from this window to another non AS/400 application and paste the data into a new application.Correct me if I'm wrong in my assumption.

IF Todd is correct, I do not believe you can do this with just a hot key/macro. We have an application where we have two screens displayed. Screen One is an AS400 app should our invoice. Screen Two is a Web app from the customer. Ad app was written (Java) I think. that copies data screen1 to screen2.

    Not a problem.

I am looking to create a hotkey to move the cursor to the position I need & then highlight and copy the 11 characters only.

I think it is just not possible. No matter how much more info was given. Technically I do not see a way to do this.

I would look into some screen scraping software.

Just go to the web and search for "Screen Scraping"

You will get many hits. Contact one or more of the Vendors and give them the specifics for what you want to do. One of them may be able to assist you.

Current version should be 9.3. I can't locate docs for as far back as 7.11.

I'd look through any help text to find reference to copying to clip-board or to anything like DDE. From there, it's unlikely if EXTRA has much chance of getting anything into another window unless it's a second EXTRA session window.

How would I do that, to get it into a second EXTRA session window?

That is the main issue. Switching windows. If there were more than 2 open, how do you identify the correct window?

normally I work with the same session open, so I use page down to toggle between the two.

Maybe I need to re-state the question:
Is there anyway to duplicate the action of:
    highlighting text, and copying it with the mouse;
    but use a hotkey instead?

Without documentation for a version of EXTRA! going back to 7.11, we can't give much advice. Your help text might be the only useful source of info.

That is what I was afraid of, unfortunately the help text is not available.

Unfortunate that you are stuck with an out of date product without even documentation. Even Mocha 5250 can be had for only $299US for a site license, and it could get close to your desired macro if not do the whole thing. Hard to understand why an employer wouldn't at least go that small step.

Well, I'll keep searching, but I appreciate everyone's help.

    Thank you
