From a desktop, you will need iSeries Client Access, a software application that must be installed on the workstation:

You mean a software or the actual physical connection? Physical connection you can connect to it via Twinax or TCP/IP. Software connection, you can actually just use a Telnet program. You don't need a special software but there are many out there on the market. Just look for a 5250 package and you should be all set and ready to go.

There are so many software available to connect to AS/400 from your desktop. Some of them are RUMBA, Mochasoft, WC3270 emulator. We can also connect through Telnet and Putty. But IBM i Access Client solutions is the best connectivity software from IBM to connect AS/400.

I strongly recommend IBM's i Access Client Solutions. The beauty of this application is that it is contained in a single .JAR file. The file can reside on a server from which all your users can launch their interactive sessions. When IBM releases a new version, just replace that one file on your server and your users will get the new version next time the application is launched. This is IBM's current solution and the only one which is being updated.

You didn't indicate which flavor of RPG, (II, III, /400, IV, /Free). If you you are going to use modern RPG techniques and/or RPG /Free, you will also want RDI or some other development environment. I understand that Liam Allan wrote, available for free at , I have never used this, but I hear good things about it, and I like the price point.
