i have two vlans configured into a juniper netscreen (a screenOS device). I have connected a catalyst to the nic i have configured the vlans on. I need an example configuration to shoot into the cisco to be able to ping both juniper vlan addresses from the cisco

Try this:

I’m considering that you already made a trunk on the Juniper port (with dot1q encapsulation)

When it’s done, then do the same in the cisco

Switch1#configure terminal

create the vlans on the cisco
add the access ports (for other switches or PC’s) to those vlans

Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
Switch1(config)#interface FastEthernet0/(interface number it’s connected into)
Switch1(config-if)#switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
Switch1(config-if)#switchport mode trunk

Additionally, dont forget to add the proper native/tagging commands: Switch1(config-if)#switchport trunk native vlan <vlan#> Switch1(config-if)#switchport trunk allow vlan {all | add <vlan#>} And as for the pings, be sure to give your management VLAN Interface an IP address...

I've got a Juniper Netscreen 25 and an old Cisco 2900XL switch with which I'm simply trying to set up a 'router on a stick scenario' and I can't seem get the trunk working. On the Cisco 2900 I've done the following: Created 3 vlans: 10, 20 & 30, assigned 5 ports to each vlan, set fa0/20 as the trunk port using 802.1q and assigned an IP to each vlan so I can ping test once complete. On the Juniper I've: Created 3 sub interfaces eth1.1, 1.2 & 1.3, specified eth1 to use 802.1q, assigned an ip to each interface in the same subnet as the corresponding vlans on the Cisco, specified the same vlan tags as on the Cisco 2900, Made all 3 sub-interfaces members of the trust zone and I can't get any traffic across the trunk. I've even resorted to changing the cable :) Any help would be greatly appreciated.
