A .CHK file can come from a number of sources. Without know for sure, I'd say hold off. Let us know what folder/directory you saw these files in. That may give us a clue as to what generated them. Then we can let you know if they are safe to delete.

    InterCheck Checksum Database
    Saved File Fragment
    Netgear Router Firmware File
    StarCraft Chunk File
temporary file format used by WordPerfect
fragments saved by Windows Disk Defragmenter

other sources and info can be found here

Those kinds of files are usually created by a disk tool when it checks for the integrity of your data and finds some kind of corruption.

Did you disconnect the disk while someting was being written to it?

By the words in your last comment, I suppose you already deleted them.  How did things go?

I did not delete.  I am not good  at this stuff.

I just tried to transfersome videos from my old external hard disk to a new3 larger one I just bought, hoping that a larger storage space would make it easier to open or retrieve of fis files.  When I tried to move a few folders from one to the other, some files just disapperared completely during the btransfer.  I tried "undue move" but they did not come back.  Looks like they are gone forever.  Is there a way to check?  So now there are two problems....unidentified .chk files and files that disappeared when I tried to move them from one drive to another.

When doing your transfer, did you have both external drives connected at the same time or did you copy to PC first? I learned a long time ago it's better to so a COPY / PASTE instead of a CUT / PASTE. Just in case something goes wrong you still have the original when moving files. Once you are sure it's at it's new destination and works, then go back and delete the source file. If these are USB drives, are they version 2.0 ,  3.0 or 3.1 ? The later ones have a bit better performance.

    That is unfortunate.

There are some things you can try, but there is no guarantee that they will allow you to recover the lost files.

The easiest way, if you know the extensions of the files that disappeared, is trying to rename the chk files to the extension of the lost files.  Some times this works, but there is no easy way to know which chk file corresponds to which lost file, and sometimes the correspondence is not 1 to 1.

If that doesn't work or is not possible for some reason, you might be able to find on the web some program designed with the specific purpose of recovering chk files.  Just be very careful, as some of them might be malware that looks like a legit application (scan any installer or executable file with a good and up-to-date antivirus before running them).

    Good luck.

You can also try some kind of "undelete" application on the original disk.  Maybe some files are recoverable there if no more data has been written to that disk.

I only used the "move" file command and both drives were connected.
I could not move from one drive to the PC and move again because my PC is old and when I tried to move files to it I got a message that there was not enough free space available.  The external drives have capacity of over 500 PB each, but I was moving from the olds one because my computer was frreezing many times when I tried to get files from it.  The move command workede a few times, but the last transfer failed and it looks like files disappeared.
