My printer won't print - it says to contact hpinstantink.com.

It probably means you are out of ink or the ink cartridge is out of date. I use be be a fan of HP printers but a while back they put QR code on their ink. IF you buy in bulk when on sale, by the time you go to use it they may say it’s out of date and won’t work. This means you’re throwing away a full cartridge. There may be a detailed explanation in the manual but that’s my guess based on my experience.

I don't go quite as far as stepping away from HP printers (due to their ink policies), but I'm sure short on enthusiasm. In the past few years, my need for physically printed pages has gone way down. That means that cartridges last for far fewer pages and regularly expire by date rather than by being out of ink.

I doubt if I've had a cartridge run out of ink in the past two years. I have, however, had to  buy full sets of color ink cartridges.

My first guess would also be the ink cartridge (or cartridges).

Is this HP printer worked just before this error? Have you checked ink cartridge? Is it a stand alone/network printer? Several causes might be there behind this issue.

This issue is indicative of the printer being involved in the instant ink contract from HP in that printer is trying to order new cartridges to replace the old ones, and cannot. You need to take the printer serial number and contact hpinstantink.com.Website and get the support phone number and get the contract canceled, or reinstated. The other thing that you can do is replace the cartridges with OEM cartridges from a store that sells them such as Staples or Office Deport that are not registered with hpinstantink.com. This may not work though.

You did not mention model of HP printer. However, you can check this article from HP, which can help you to understand this issue: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01953073
