I recently acquired a Seagate 1 TB hard drive but it's giving me this error on my Windows 10 machine: The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error. I can see my folders but can't open the files. What can I do?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

It may be possible the drive got damaged. This can happen if you disconnect the drive without “ejecting” it from the computer first. Usually you can do a repair option on the drive when reinserted into a USB port.

Assuming this is brand new and under warranty. Contact directly the vendor/manufacturer's customer care and ask for help. Don't format/do anything like that before asking them. What you can try reboot the system in safe mode and check if that happens again. Take all necessary backups to another media or another drive of your laptop/ desktop.
