Hello, we are planning to do hardware upgrade as we are dependent on the old hardware which is having issues. we are currently on Power 5 machines running OS version V5R4M5. Now I want to move to power 7 machines without upgrading the operating system. Is it possible to run V5R4 on power 7 machines? Thanks!

Thank you for the Response. I just want to make sure that if I upgrade my Hardware without updating the software, will it works or not. Thanks for the immediate response.

Your LPAR OS level should be minimum 6.1 to run in Power 7 servers.

Even if V5R4 was compatible, there'd be no way to run it since new V5R4 license keys are no longer available. To run on different hardware, you need a different license key.

Upgrading from v5r4 to v7r1 requires a bit of preparation but (assuming you've not stripped program observability) the process will regenerate the v5r4 objects with no intervention needed on your part.

I recall going from 5.4 to 6.1 at a previous employer that we ran into issues with critical apps that were no longer supported (actually one of the IBM aps had not been supported for several releases, but lacking observability was a huge issue in not being able to migrate the app.), the PL1 compiler was no longer provided and it seems that there were a couple of other issues. Put us off moving forward for about 18 months so we could find suitable replacements. Just saying that it is very important to check what you have for compatibility moving to 6.1 and beyond.

If you are looking to make the switch, talk to you IBM rep on your concerns. There will be a few things that will need changing and somethings my no longer be supported. They would be the best to ask.

When we moved from 5.4 to 6.1 the changes were minimal. Last year we moved from 6.1 on Power5 to 7.2 on Power7 - again, changes were minimal. Key is observability.

IBM provides a free program which will analyze your programs for possible issues from the upgrade. Recommend starting here.
