No, this is not so tough for you to understand the IT World. While you did not mention, your professional/academic qualifications/your working experience. Even you did not mention, why you detached for 3 years. However, this all depends on your knowledge and your grasping power. You can start to read new and good references / books for coping up in the new World.

If you had previous solid experience, it will be easier to re-enter than to start new out of school for a new developer. But better answers would need some background info. More and better experience should improve points of re-entry.

Moreover age is a factor for sustaining in today's market competition. If possible, you can try to take a job even it offers low salary/from local area. But if you have high academic certificates that can help you to get a good start.

What coding languages do you have experience with? What direction do you want to take your career in? There are some languages better suited for specific areas if the IT world. For example you would not code network security with RPG/ILE.

Why did you tell don't have experience, you worked for one year as lecturer. It is better to search a work for school or that type of organizations. As you was a lecturer, you must have good computer related books/notes at your home. Just read and read them, and hopefully you can gain some knowledge which can help you a lot.

What type of software coding are you looking at getting into, mobile, security, networking? You may find an entry / inter position somewhere to at least get a little more practical hands on experience. That will make further job hunting easier.
