You can, but, having the certifications will only increase your profile in the eyes of the hiring manager and get you the opportunity to at least see someone and show your stuff.  I had 10+ years experience in the military, but without that piece of paper, no one would crack the door. Once I got my first one, the door was open and I was in. Good luck.
