Is it possible for the inside layer of a laptop display to be broken/cracked in a way that looks like there would have been impact (for example the equivalent of a pebble on a windshield, but with not only the point of impact but also a couple inches of discoloration and multiple runoffs), without that impact actually having occurred?

It seems that, this is a hardware related issue. Generally, it is not possible. If it is under warranty better contact to their service center/ customer care.

It may be possible that it was not an impact. There may have been an issue where a lot of pressure caused it to crack. If there was something on the laptop when the cover was closed.
