After I log in, I get a message preparing windows. Later it says can't log on. Logout and log back in. This doesn't work. If I hit dismiss, I lose most of my desktop icons.

I have seen this happen when a WIndows update does not go well. My password was not being accepted. I know it was correct. You may have to boot up in safe mode and go back to the last good restore point. After that I tried the password again it it let me log in.

First of all what OS is there, If it is Windows, Which one is like 7/8/8.1/10. Whatever Windows it is, you can try with windows repair disk/ try the same in safe mode.

One more thing, if you manage to start the system in safe mode, first of all take all necessary backups (personal files/folders/pictures/videos and whatever is necessary). In safe mode you can also create an another account and try with new account when booting in normal mode. Moreover, is your password in a alphanumeric format? Check the NUM lock at the time of supplying password.

Trouble getting into & out of the SAFE MODE. In the safe mode I couldn't go back to before the problem started. Log out and log in didn't work. I pressed Dismiss and Added Quicken & Open Office using backup Files. I do not turn off my laptop. I put it in Sleep Mode. This works for me.

Why did not you turn off the laptop? Is the key creating problem/not in working condition? If the key works, you can press a long on the start/ shutdown key on the laptop and it shuts the laptop.
