BITS & Automatic Update Issues

Dear All, Can you help please? Automatic Updates problem. I have recentl upgraded to the new update Microsoft Automatic Update version and ever since have been having problems. I have been able in the interim download the necessary critical updates etc directly from the Microsoft site, so the good news is the computer is up to date. I have been to the Microsft site and viewed numerous papers and entered the error codes into their search/ gone to Google etc and after many hours of searching for the answer - but to no avail as they either do not recognise the error code or the direction to fix is not pertinent. FYI, I am running Win2000 (SP4) and IE 6.0 (SP1) I have uninstalled Windows update an started again. It still goes through all the correct scanning, tries to download and then reports with a failed download:- Installation Failure Error Code: 0x80246008 Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following resources. For self-help options: Frequently Asked Questions Find Solutions Windows Update Newsgroup For assisted support options: Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for issues related to getting updates) Print | Close The Event Log states:- Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7024 Date: 10/08/2005 Time: 22:33:16 User: N/A Computer: HOME Description: The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with service-specific error 2147942402. When I also go to Services, BITS is stopped and if I try to start I get ....... service-specific error code- 2147024894

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

There are two things I would try:

First, download and apply the BITS patch from Microsoft (available here: – sorry about the long URL, blame Microsoft…
This is KB842773.

If that doesn’t work, break out your original install media (the Windows 2000 install CD if possible) and run a repair. You’ll have to re-apply service packs and security updates, so try the KB842773 route first….

You might try running ?bitsadmin.exe /UTIL /REPAIRSERVICE? to repair a corrupted BITS installation. The bitsadmin.exe tool is part of Windows XP Service Pack 2 Support Tools. See Q838079 for information on Windows XP Service Pack 2 Support Tools.
