For about the past year or so, I've been using Thunderbird and it had this setting called 'adaptive junk mail control' which allowed me to avoid a ton of spam emails. Recently, I moved to Outlook 2016. Is there any setting like this in Outlook? If not, what's the best way to avoid spam emails? Thank you.

As far as I know, by default, Outlook has some basic junk mail filtering. These messages are placed in the Junk E-Mail folder. The ideal setup is to use an email service such as O365, G Suite, etc. for spam filtering. They tend to do a very good job filtering out the junk.

Best way is no cost. Open Outlook, click Home tab > Junk > Junk E-mail Options. On next dialog box, it consists of four tabs, while each purposed to control a certain level of spam protection. Also tabs' names are self explanatory like Options, Safe Senders, Safe Recipients, Blocked Senders and International. Now you can configure whatever will be suitable for your requirements.
