Becoming a Freelance Developer

Career Development
Programming Languages
Hi, as a teenager money has only recently become something that I've found essential. I have been involved in the opensource comunity developing software for 2 years. I woundering if there is a career for me in freelance programming through sites like and I know I would have to compete with outsouced workers, but even a couple thousand dollars would last a year for me. So what I want to know is: if I had all the skills and time needed could I make an equal amount of money freelancing as I would working at McDonalds part time?

Your decision should be based on how either option (and others) fits your long term future plans. Not only what will you be earning, but what will you be learning? The advantage of working at a place like McDonald’s is that you will be interacting with people – customers, management and fellow employees, in a real business setting, but you will not learn new IT skills. Bidding online for development projects may improve your technology skills, but is a pretty anonymous workplace. Ideally, you should look for something that offers both. For example, if you are of legal working age, there may be an opportunity to work for a local end user company or systems integrator supporting open source rollouts, in which case you get a more rounded experience.

If you are looking for an impartial source on developer trends, and/or opportunities to try your hand at freelancing, consider visiting odesk.

You won't know if you have a career in it unless you try.

I think you could make more money as a programmer, and you will learn more also. Have you heard about android? It is a platform for mobile phones developed by google. The first android based device (T Mobile G1) has just hit the market, and many people around the world are developing android applications, although the official google's android market at this moment, allows only free apps.

I really enjoy being a freelance programmer. I do all my work over the internet. I use websites like They have a great escrow payment system and bidding system that is relaible and safe. I must admit, when I first started,it was a little tough, but with sheer determination im now an independent programmer and web designer.
