Batch jobs in mainframes

I'm working in a financial company. I can see most of batch jobs are still running in Mainframes. What are the best technologies that you would suggest to migrate the batch jobs which is as accurate and fast like mainframe? Any technology that will sort the file faster than mainframes?

What is the business reason for moving these processes off of the mainframe? Has anyone done any analysis to determine ROI?

It's pretty unlikely you'll find anything (that isn't expensive) that is as accurate and fast and that will sort as fast as a mainframe. That's particularly true as the volume of work scales up.

For any given single task, mainframes can be outperformed in terms of clock time. That is, if you use a stopwatch to time a job on a loaded mainframe, the same business process might run in a shorter time on a smaller system. However, the mainframe should be running at the very least hundreds of other concurrent processes, likely even thousands or tens of thousands. In order to get the total time to improve for all of the work being done, you need dozens or hundreds of other smaller systems at once. And, of course, the workflow needs to be managed for all of them concurrently.

Is there a reason for looking to drop the mainframe processing? It is a true workhorse and for heavy use there is little that can beat it. If you have money to burn, you may be able to purchase enough new hardware to do the same work, but now instead of trying to keep just the mainframe running you may have a ridiculous amount of hardware.
