Avoid Java code in JSP files

I'm pretty new to Java and I'm trying to understand if there's a way to avoid Java code in JSP files. Something like this:
<%= x+1 %>
<%= request.getParameter("name") %>
<%! counter++; %>
Is the best technique? Or is there another way to do it?
