The audio on my laptop is not working. It still makes the Windows sounds but will not play sounds from music or video. So the speakers are fine. The drivers are up to date. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling them. This is a Dell Latitude E7440

If it still make the Windows sound then it’s most likely the app or program. Make sure what ever you are using to play the video/audio is not muted. Some sites like Facebook do that by default. You actually have to unmute videos to hear them.

What software did you use for this purpose? Is it Windows Media Player/VLC player or other? If the sound is working on windows and when you log on desktop and if there is a chime sound or whatever it is, then the sound driver is OK. May be the problem of the software that you are using. If you are using WMP then some codes are necessary for running audio/video correctly.

After reading the other comments, I would also go into the control panel and check to make sure that all the sound device drivers are loaded and not disabled. It is possible that while it will use the windows sounds not all the drivers are correctly enabled. I have seen this issue in Win 7 and Win 8 when attempting to play back both Audio and Video. Microsoft for some reason does not always load all the drivers correctly.

You could also try to see if headphones or external speakers work. If they do the the sound card is working and the speakers themselves may be damaged. I'm not sure if the standard Windows sounds come from the same drivers.

One more thing, you can try to update your system through Windows update utility and check that the update is completed successfully and there is no pending update. Sometimes, system update is also helpful.
