BRMS
Hi everyone,
After a couple of years, I was tasked to handle an AS/400 machine again. I have totally no idea now as I have worked with hardware only. Do you have any idea on how to schedule DAILY backup in AS/400 not using BRMS but only the native SAVSYS? Thank you.

Software/Hardware used:
SAVSYS, BRMS, AS400

You could use Operational Assistant Backup : GO BACKUP

    It depends...

We have a window of time big enough that we do a full system save 5 nights a week (nothing the other two, but generally no one is here on the weekend).  Go SAVE  option 21 and there are parms to specifify the time that it kicks off. We have it set up so that a coworker goes into the data center and at the console workstation (HMC) types a 21 on the screen (already at SAVE menu) and presses enter to give the system the OK to run the back up that night. He does this at 11:45 AM and the back up kicks off at about 2:20 AM the next morning.

In a previous place of employment I wrote a CL program that was scheduled with the job scheduler (wrkjobscde). My program would shut down certain subsystems and back up selected libraries then restart subsystems and jobs. Depending on the day, what was backed up. As I recall I did full system save on one of the weekend days.  However since then, the OS has changed that requires has a requirement of console workstation to allow the system to go into a restricted state for full system back ups. (We went to BRMS before I left that company).

Look at using save while active if you have to roll your own.

We use azohawks method here. We have a CL that ends the jobs, subsystems and issues the backup. Depending on the type of back up, we have 2 jobs in the job scheduler set to run them. A SAVCHGOBJ and a full system back up. If you need more info, provide some specifics about your backup type and we can guide you further.

We do a selective backup on a daily basis. Save while active is definitely your friend if you can't take any serious down time.
