How far is it moving? Across the room? To another site?
We moved our 9406-520 about 15 miles. We contracted IBM to do it. Everything went smooth.

If you system is under maintenance contracts with IBM then you will need to get them involved.
They will void your warranties and not cover damage if it occurs during the move if you don’t follow the rules.

If you’re moving across the building or across the street this shouldn’t be a big deal. IBM may let you do it yourself and you’ll just be out for the inspection.

If you’re going across town or country then this will be a bigger ($$$) job for IBM.

I’ve moved smaller 8xx systems from Irvine, CA to Cleveland, OH in 24 hours for around 8-10 K per system.

But I’ve also moved bigger systems across town and dropped 30 K to have 10 IBM guys get it done in 8 hours or less.

It’s going to depend on the bells and whistles you sign up for.

Totally in agreement on getting IBM involved with the move. I've moved a half-dozen ystems over the years and IBM was involved in every one except the last move (and that was not my choice). The only one where I had ANY problems preventing the system from coming up was the one where IBM was not involved - and that required an emergency repair call which of course we got charged for. Smooth relocation - (1) Have IBM inspect the site where the system is going. You need to have the correct space around the equipment for servicability, the correct power, network lines and ECS dial-up phone lines. (2) Plan ahead on network connectivity - what IP, subnet and gateway address values will you need. Print out copies of what you have now, just in case. (3) Make TWO complete backups (option #21) of your system before it moves. (4) Have contact information for all your non-IBM software (5) Contingency planning - what do you do if the truck with your system runs off a bridge? IBM does provide an emergency recovery service - a type of DR service - where they will provide you with a like machine until yours is replaced. There is a cost involved. If you are already using a DR service like Sunguard, review your disaster plans. If this is your only system, and things are mission critical, consider upgrading to a newer box (trade in your old box), put that new box at your new location and just do a save/restore. Regards Mike
