    You can store numeric in an alpha field. The problem is to have to either define it in a data structure, use the built in functions to get it back into a usable field for computations. Trying to put alpha into a numeric field will result in a decimal data error.

    You can use CHAR datatype which supports both numeric & Character data.

    But, You got to be more cautious while using Character field for Numeric data. When you would like to move numeric data (in CHAR field) to Numeric field, you got to use monitor to avoid system crash. And, have the default value passed in case of any unforeseen errors.
