This sounds like a homework question. Over the past several days you have been asking a number of questions that sound like homework.  If so, there should be something in your text book or explained in class.  If you do your reading and have a question (in this case perhaps "Why would someone use an edit word when an edit code will do?" we will try to help you out.

We are not trying to be mean to you, but most of us got a basic foundation in a class somewhere and have had to dig through manuals to educate ourselves beyound the classroom. Consequently we want to encourage you to do the same. I have spent the bulk of my career in a single person shop (as far as the IBM i and RPG have been concerned). Reading manuals, books, articles, websites, conferences, webinars, and local user groups (LUGS) have all been part of my on going education.

You might want to download an RPG Redbook (free to download) from IBM.

If this is not homework, please advise us of what you are doing (buisiness case) so that perhaps we can provide you with a more comprehensive solution to your questions.

The ILE RPG Chapter 10. Editing Numeric Fields tells about all there is to know about EDTCDE and EDTWRD, including dozens of examples. You should be looking at the documentation rather than asking us to do it for you and to copy from documentation to paste here. It helps no one.

If you have a problem with the documentation, describe the problem and we might be able to help. If you try something and it doesn't work as expected, that's a good case for posting a question.

These have to do with editing you fields for reporting purposes. Do you have a specific example you need help in understanding? If you have trouble understanding coding in RPGLE or anything else, post some sample code and we can try an clear it up for you. General questions will get a general answer because we have no specific context to apply our response to.
