Do ASHRAE 90.1-2010 updates mean that economizers are only used where it's a good fit, or are they still wedged into designs despite cost and build difficulty?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

The ASHRAE 90.1-2010 updates regarding economizers generally mean that almost all areas of the country must use the economizers regardless of whether they are a good fit. This is because of energy efficiency requirements as well as changes in building codes enacted by the EPA. The ASHRAE 90.1-2010 updates require that buildings with a cooling capacity of greater than 54,000 Btu/h have a retrofit design that includes an air or water economizer. The economizers must be triggered when outdoor temperatures are at 50 degrees Fahrenheit when measured by dry bulb. These changes are important to data centers due to the great amount of energy needed to keep data center equipment at the ideal temperature.
