I don't think this is entirely possible but I thought I would ask (I used to do it with Microsoft Outlook). For incoming emails to my Gmail, can I alter the subject line? Meaning I want to add it like this: "Category - subject line". Does that make sense? Thank you!
Using the mail client, mails stay on the server that way & no text file comes to the PC/laptop. It may not possible to edit any mails you look at through the mail client & that stay on the server. As you asked, you'd have to use a mail client utility that downloads the mail to the PC individually could edit the mails & after that you could send the mails back to the server. Or you can create your own Labels and then moved or archived the mail to that label.
Whether or not e-mails stay on the server and whether any are transferred to the client both depend on the connection protocol and the protocol configuration. It's not easy to modify any non-draft item on the server.
Most clients provide ways to tag and/or identify and organize items by assigned categories. No modification of any subject or body element is needed.
Is GMail only accessed via browser? Or are you using a client such as Outlook for it?
