    In general, "alpha-numeric characters" are the characters you can type using a keyboard. They are letters of an alphabet (alpha), digits (numeric) and often punctuation marks too.

    They generally are not graphic characters like "ᴥ" or "ỻ" or "ↂ" (assuming those come across cleanly).
