My laptop that I used for emails recently died so I just installed Thunderbird on my new machine. I still have the hard drive from my old machine (it's an external drive). Would I be able to recover those files in Thunderbird?

In general, emails are all reside in main server/vendor's server if the account/ profile is same. So as you asked you can get all emails while you upgrade/change PC/laptop. But if you wanted to try getting emails from another profile then this is another issue. Please link here for more help: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1062284

Review the steps in the Mozilla support site titled Moving Thunderbird Data to a New Computer.

If you've never done it before, follow through the steps at least once on your laptop/PC without changing anything. After you're familiar with the old and new pieces, it should be pretty easy.

You can make almost any changes you want on the new side, and can almost always start over fresh. Take care not to change anything on the old HDD until the e-mails are fully within the new Thunderbird area.
