How to build a website without using a website builder

Website
Hello techies out there! Forgive my ignorance but I am clueless to building a website. My question is...
Is there anyway that you can build a website without using a website builder site like Wix or GoDaddy? For example, if you had the knowledge of say Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg, could you build a website without the use of these sites?

Yes, get a tool like Visual studios. There is even a free one called Visual Studios Express. The you can design away providing you know how to code in languages like VB.NET and / or C#. You can create sites, web forms and a whole lot of other content. Pair this up with SQL Server Express to manage a database and there is not much you cannot do.

Then watch a few tutorial videos on YouTube and that will get you started in the right direction.

If you have enough knowledge/have good programming knowledge with designing concepts, you can create website without help of a website builder. If you don't have enough knowledge on programming languages/ good concepts then you can try with web site builders. In that websites there are so many tools/buttons that can help to create website even without programming knowledge/logic concepts. However you did not mention what is your qualification. As a beginner you can try with Netbeans/Eclipse and both are free to use.

Thank you for the reply ToddN2000, but I wouldn't have the first clue how to do any of that. Lol! I think I may need to rely on Wix for building my website. Thanks again though!

A web site can be built with Notepad, if that's all you have.

Whether that makes good sense depends on what you want users to do on the site.
