Out of the blue, every night as I sleep, Word 2010 is 'autosaving' all my word documents, and I am unable to fully restore them as a result. How can I put a halt to this?

All MS Office has a feature autorecovery instead of autosave.
Click file menu > options > save and uncheck the save autorecover info every.... option. Remember, if you do turn off this option, you should get into the habit frequently manually saving the document like press ctrl +s.

How often are you having to restore your files? I do not see this auto-recovery being an issue unless there is something else going on. Can you elaborate a little more?
