Been researching an article for CW's very own Cliff Saran while, by chance, also speaking with a number of IT investors - the research being on networking innovations; oh and, by another chance, also judging an awards event, networking category and also visited a Cambridge Wireless innovations...

Optimisation Springs To Life

Steve Broadhead Steve Broadhead Profile: Steve Broadhead

It's been a busy old Spring so far - I'm still trying to get my head around the recession - IT is going bonkers, spending like the world is about to end (does somebody know something we don't?), every flight I take from wherever to wherever is full and when I take a few days...

I know that we IT lot live on a different planet to the rest of the world (or so we are often told), but I'm really trying to find the real recession out there at the mo'.

Take airlines for example. I've been doing far too much travelling for my own good over the past few months,...

Answer: when it's a power supply.

Just released the latest test report for HP on its ProCurve 2520 Ethernet switch - http://www.broadband-testing.co.uk/ReportList.aspx - and the point of interest here is not that it's got plenty of Layer 2/two and a bit features and is well priced...

Is No News Really Good News?

Steve Broadhead Steve Broadhead Profile: Steve Broadhead

It's the middle of January now and, since snow and tragic earthquakes do not qualify as mainstream networking news, I've been patiently waiting for some news to appear in the networking world so that I can blog about it and, well, none has.

The closest we've come was with the GreenTouch...

Still Summer – Still Cloudy…

It's a very interesting scenario when you work for yourself and summer arrives.

People go on holiday. Which is very annoying when:

a) You're trying to finalise dates for the next series of test projects and
b) You're looking for news in the networking world to blog...

What Not To Do With £200m Of Your Money

Steve Broadhead Steve Broadhead Profile: Steve Broadhead
ADC, DBAM, jetNEXUS, Load balancing, Mobile data, NetMotion, VoIP, Wifi

So the government's Digital Britain roadmap goes into operation today.

Given that there are 245 pages of the report wot launches it, I have focused on one obvious element, which is how much public money is being spent on the great new digital Britain, that amount being £200m. Now,...

Interesting to see that, just as HP announces more job losses - see front page of CW today - amounting to 6,400 in addition to the 7,500 announced last Autumn, at the same time HP is jointly investing $180m in association with Microsoft to create a complete unified comms and collaboration...

Broadband Wideboys?

Steve Broadhead Steve Broadhead Profile: Steve Broadhead
Broadband, ftth, IPTV, jetNEXUS, NetMotion, ProCurve, Virgin, WLAN

Interesting to hear that Virgin is piloting 200-400Mbps Broadband (in Kent, so they be hopful of a good result (bad spelling makes bad gags) without really knowing what applications it will be used for.

Here in Andorra they've also been rolling out FTTH and have that great application...

Load Unbalanced

Steve Broadhead Steve Broadhead Profile: Steve Broadhead
ADC, Alteon, jetNEXUS, Load balancing, Nortel, RADware

So, as the fall-out from Nortel's demise continues, we see that it agreed to sell the assets of its old Alteon division/technology to Radware for around £12m as part of its bankruptcy restructuring plan. Considering that it paid almost $8bn back in 2000, that's...
