A public life used to be limited to those who had fame and or fortune, but now literally anyone can take to the world’s stage through the press of a button.

At a stroke, a 14-year-old girl from Hertfordshire used Facebook events to post a party invitation and received replies from 21,000 people who said they would come.

The Harpenden girl had intended to invite only 15 friends, according to the BBC.

Problem is, she included her address, so police are on standby to ensure no unwanted crowds turn up for the party, which has been cancelled.

Downtime assumes that for her 16th birthday, the girl will not be using Facebook events, but will choose a safer channel of communication to send out invitations.

Alternatively, she should learn how to use the technology properly. According to Facebook, choosing to create  a “public event” means anyone can view and reply.
