Over-engineering a solution to a non-existent problem

Downtime was mystified by a Reuters report that a Belgian health products distributor has invented a microchip that it claims will protect mobile phone users from potentially damaging electromagnetic radiation.
Armed with only his high school physics, Downtime reckons this means the chip produces “anti-waves” to the radio waves that carry the call. This means the call loses all its information. 
Surely a cheaper alternative, and even safer, would be to switch off the damn phone?
