Passed VCP 4!

Raj Perumal Raj Perumal Profile: Raj Perumal

Hi folks! So I passed my VCP 4 today! I finally decided to tackle the latest certification from VMware and get it out of the way!

So how did I find it? In all honesty it was pretty easy compared to the Cisco exams I’m used to writing. I did find the VCP 4 exam a bit harder than the VCP 3 exam however. It seemed like there was more material they were testing on. After all there are a ton of new features in vSphere 4 so that does make sense.

If you have your VCP 3 you still have until the end of the month to writh your VCP 4 before you are forced to take the upgrade course. If you’re one of the people in this boat, then I suggest  you write it and save yourself some money! The exam is pretty straight-forward!

Pushing out apps via BES

Raj Perumal Raj Perumal Profile: Raj Perumal

Hello again folks! So have you ever wondered how you can use BES for just more than syncing your email to your BlackBerries? Well there is one thing that is great, and that’s centralized management!

With BES you can push your own software out to the BlackBerries in the field fairly easily. It just involves getting a hold of the installer file and placing it on your server and then doing some extra configuration for each model BlackBerry in your organization.

If you follow the steps at this link you should be well on your way to pushing out your first package. If you have  ever had to push out a patch via the BlackBerry then this won’t be foreign to you.

Windows 7 “new feature”

Raj Perumal Raj Perumal Profile: Raj Perumal

Hi folks, I found this little tidbit recently posted on the net. It was recently revealed that Windows 7 has a “God Mode”.

Basically this allows you to tweak Windows 7 from within a folder. You just create a new folder and change the folder name to:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

Then when you access the folder you will have a long list of icons that you can click to take you to different settings in Windows. A one stop shop for tweaking Windows 7!

You can read more about it here.

VCP Testing Extended

Raj Perumal Raj Perumal Profile: Raj Perumal

Hi folks. For those of you rushing to finish your VCP certifications in lieu of the recent deadlines, you can rest easy. At least for a little bit. 🙂

VMware has extended the deadline to write your VCP 310 until the end of March. They have also extended the deadline to write the upgrade exam for VCP 4 until the end of January if you already have VCP 3 without having to take the upgrade course.

By extending the deadline it gives people a chance to recover from the holiday season and study and pass the exam. Thanks VMware for doing this for all of us, it is much appreciated!

Hi folks! So in my hometown of Winnipeg, one of our local universities has decided to partner with Cisco! This also involved the help of the federal and provincial government.

The University of Winnipeg(U of W) has partnered with Cisco on a 7 million dollar deal to create 34 research and teaching labs. They also are using the power of TelePresence for distance education.

This is going to be a great boon to our educational community! Kudos to the U of W and Cisco on the deal! You can read more about it here.

MTS sells Allstream

Raj Perumal Raj Perumal Profile: Raj Perumal

Hi folks, for those of you from Canada you might find this news of interest. MTS has sold off the IT consulting portion of their Allstream division!

MTS is one of the largest telephony players in the province of Manitoba and they have an IT division called Allstream. They’ve decided to sell it off but keep their Winnipeg employees according to what I read in the paper.

Anyways, I wonder why they’ve decided to do this? Is this a result of the economic downturn or some other play? Time will only tell. It should be interesting to see what the buyer (Pricewaterhouse Coopers) does with this acquisition.

You can read more about it here.

Cisco TelePresence reunites a family over the holiday season

Raj Perumal Raj Perumal Profile: Raj Perumal

Hi folks, so for this holiday season Cisco did a great thing. They had a contest for people to submit their stories so people could connect over the holidays through the power of TelePresence.

TelePresence (if you haven’t seen the show 24), is the ability to do video conferencing using Cisco technology. Cisco seamlessly integrates their network, voice and video technology to produce a perfect way to communicate.

Well in this case a family was reunited using this contest. This family was reunited after more than 50 years of being apart. Now this is obviously not what most people would use the technology for. But if you are ever interested in doing video conferencing this technology is definitely worth looking into.

You can read more about the story here.

Low Battery Life in BlackBerries

Raj Perumal Raj Perumal Profile: Raj Perumal

Hi folks, one of the most common things that happen with BlackBerries is low battery life. Numerous times i’ve had people tell me that their BlackBerry battery is draining too fast for their own good.

People ask me how I manage to use my BlackBerry as often as I do and don’t have to recharge it till it’s time to go to bed. Well the answer is easier than you might think. Close those apps!

When you open apps on your BlackBerry they stay open. If you don’t choose close or exit from the menu they are still running in the background. With lots of apps open you tend to drain more battery life. If you actively manage your open apps and close them you will extend your battery life.

SMS Auto Reply with BlackBerry

Raj Perumal Raj Perumal Profile: Raj Perumal

Hi folks. These days with the proliferation of cell phones people need a way to respond to calls and texts while driving without actually doing so.

Well with BlackBerry there is an app called NotNow that they can use to do auto replies when people call or text you.

NotNow will auto respond when you have meetings in your calendars or if you set it into do not disturb mode. This way you can be driving and if someone texts you it will tell them you’re busy. This is a great way to let people know automatically that you will get back to them soon. Another great app for the BlackBerry!

You can download it here.

New CCIE book is out

Raj Perumal Raj Perumal Profile: Raj Perumal

The CCIE routing and switching exam certification guide is out! I checked on Amazon and on Cisco’s web site and it is now available for purchase. Right now it seems the best price is ordering direct through Cisco from what I can see.

This is the new book covering all the updates in the CCIE curriculum so it should make for a great read. Also the famed CCIE Wendell Odom is one of the authors of this book so it’s sure to be good. Wendell writes great material and has always given so much to the Cisco community. It makes me very happy that he was involved in this book!

If you want to pick up this book, the official title is: CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Certification Guide, 4th Edition.
