Cisco Share Scare

Raj Perumal Raj Perumal Profile: Raj Perumal

Hi folks! So Cisco’s shares have dropped around 13 percent after news surfaced regarding their current quarter.

Due to Cisco’s warnings of a revenue decrease due to emerging markets. Much of this has to do with lower sales to telecoms and other providers.

Hopefully Cisco can turn this around and get back to regular business in the next quarter.

Pfizer the drug company has decided to move away from BlackBerry as their mobile platform. They have mentioned BlackBerry’s volatile state as the reason. I can’t say I blame them, but it is unfortunate.

The need for regular Security reviews

Raj Perumal Raj Perumal Profile: Raj Perumal

Hi folks! So with all the news about security, I wanted to make a quick mention on some of the things we all should be doing on a regular basis.

It’s quite easy to fall into a false sense of security and assume your network is secure. Administrators can patch and backup regularly, and even put in the latest greatest equipment to secure their network. But don’t assume you’re safe.

Usually, the bad guys out there are 10 steps ahead of you waiting to take advantage of your false sense of security to breach your network. How do you stay ahead of them? Make sure you conduct regular security audits and make sure you don’t just install the latest greatest security hardware and software, but you also analyze and examine the logs these technologies produce.

After all, you can have all the information in the world, but if you don’t analyze it and produce meaningful data from it, you’re still just as vulnerable! If this doesn’t sit in your wheelhouse, I encourage you to reach out to a reputable security firm who can provide this type of expertise to you to help you out!

A quick and easy way to use wifi securely!

Raj Perumal Raj Perumal Profile: Raj Perumal

Hi folks! So using public wifi hotspots has become more common in this day and age. Everywhere you go you can find free wifi of some sort.

But how do you secure against somebody listening in to what you’re doing? How can you protect yourself against someone gathering information on you?

Well there is one quick and easy way to secure yourself. Setup a VPN tunnel back to another location like home or the office and browse through that connection. Typically you would setup a VPN connection with no split tunnelling so all your traffic is piped through back to the site your vpn terminates at. This way all of your traffic is encrypted in the vpn and someone can’t snoop on you.

As long as you have the capability to easily establish this vpn tunnel, you are good to go!

Hi folks! So I’ve been using Evernote for quite some time now and I have to say I’m still loving the app!

Why do I like Evernote so much? It’s essentially the same experience on every platform, with a native client for every major OS. Evernote is also extremely searchable with even the ability to search within PDFs.

I also like the ability for notes collaboration with other users, and the constant syncing with the cloud. Evernote also has a host of 3rd party apps that support integration with Evernote.

BlackBerry Layoffs Again

Raj Perumal Raj Perumal Profile: Raj Perumal

Hi folks! Looks like more bad news for BlackBerry employees.

Another round of layoffs have been announced. This will cause a loss of 4500 jobs. Out of those, 300 of those jobs are in Waterloo. The smartphone maker is unfortunately continuing to bleed.

Here’s hoping there is something that can be done to save this once great company.
