Focusing on System i customers, not System i sales

Mark Fontecchio Mark Fontecchio Profile: Mark Fontecchio

The IT Jungle has a good piece about how IBM is focusing on its System i customers more than System i sales. Timothy Prickett Morgan talked with Mark Shearer, the general manager of System i, a few times during the COMMON conference in Anaheim, Calif., and came away with some interesting tidbits:

With about half of IBM’s customers having an OS/400 or i5/OS server on site, Shearer wanted to reassure COMMON attendees about the importance of the base–particularly since we all watched the revenue declines in recent years for the platform. He said that IBM is not focused on i5 sales as much as the total IBM relationship at these sites.

Interesting comment... probably too late. We have been an iSeries(AS/400,S38) shop for 25 years. The iSeries hardware is outstanding for cost of ownership and dependability. The problem is desire for functional GUI software for our business and that is where the issue is. Application developers have abandoned the platform and the options are on Windows platforms... so now we have a multi-million dollar infrastructure with more maintenance overhead spread on multiple Windows servers to replace the comparitively cheap and dependable iSeries box. Sadly I have seen the future and the iSeries future is bleak.

Dear Sir, If you really wants to help iSeries customer, As per my view technology is good, From IBM must provide Training in very few amt, if we go to IBM for any training it is too costly. As i am working IBM movex i am taking care of AS/400 admin part, and eagerly wants to learn RPG so i can make some good tool but due to non availability resources, nothing to do on this technologies. Due to costly afair with IBM and non availability (or u can say Few availabily)of people -(may be) my company also wants to switch over from IBM (May be) this is the live example. RPG or any other course fee is from IBM is Aprox RS 7500 per day which is too costly.. If we go for local mkt people are not available.
