Robot breaks Rubik’s Cube record

Got a box of Lego and a spare smartphone laying around? David Gilday and Mike Dobson did so they built the CubeStormer II.
The robot knocked 0.308 off the previous Guinness World Record for solving the Rubik’s Cube, which was held by Australian Feliks Zemdegs.
Unlike human extreme Rubik’s Cubers or, if were talking officially, ‘speedcubers’, CubeStormer II doesn’t look at the cube beforehand.
Instead, it uses an Android smartphone camera and programme to analyse images before sending the next instruction to one of the four arms four via Bluetooth.

It has to be said that the CubeStormer II has a distinct and possibly unfair advantage over humans, in that it is fitted with two extra arms.
Still, the video is interesting to watch a couple of times, even if the it doesn’t excite you as much as either David or Mike, who can be heard shouting an emphatic “ohhhh you beauty” toward the end.
