VMware Tools fails to Install Properly (VMCI, Mouse, and Video)

Nathan Simon Nathan Simon Profile: Nathan Simon

So you P2V a machine and now you cannot install VMware Tools, the below may not be the be all to end all fixes, but it fixed a VMware Tools issue I had earlier today… the VMCI Driver wouldnt install, nor would the mouse and Video drivers…

While installing VMware Tools in a Windows virtual machine, you may experience these symptoms:

•The SVGA / video driver fails to install

•The mouse driver fails to install

•You see one of these error messages: ◦Setup failed to install the VMXNet driver automatically. This driver will have to be installed manually.

The actual fix is quite easy. To find out how to fix this issue, go here.

My problem system was a 2003 server from a P to V over a year ago - all was well until attempted vmtools update.  Video and mouse were solved by adding default RunOnce key to HKLM/Software/Windows/CurrentVersion, reboot and uninstall/reinstall VM Tools - reboot.  NIC was resolved by uninstalling hidden leftover NIC (from PtoV) from device mangler

    Click View/Show Hidden devices

    and uninstall the 'ghost' entries.

     - removing and readding VM NIC - re-ip new NIC

Antivirus is the issue. The setup should not give any error while install. Please run as administartor when you run the setup and turn off antivirus, if any.

Turning vmci0 value to false is not at all a good approach.
