UNC Health Care is the latest large health system to establish its own health information exchange (HIE), as providers move toward greater interoperability and medical record sharing.
The HIE will connect UNC Health’s flagship medical center in Chapel Hill, N.C., with hospitals in the cities of Raleigh and Siler, some 1,800 faculty physicians, and with medical practices and clinics located throughout the state. UNC Health is using master person index (MPI) technology to ensure patients have unique identifiers.
The hospitals in the system all use different electronic health records, but despite this, the MPI will help ensure accurate patient identification across various settings and points of care, UNC Health said in a news release.
“Our vision is an integrated healthcare system that allows medical information to follow patients,” said CIO J.P. Kichak, in a written statement.
