Health IT received another slice of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) pie last week, with $17.7 million in grant money awarded to the Iowa Health System to upgrade its existing fiber network. The grant was awarded under the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP), which is funded by ARRA.

According to Bill Leaver, president and CEO of the Des Moines-based health care system, “This funding will allow Iowa Health System to make fast broadband connectivity available to health care providers throughout Iowa. The upgrade will lay the foundation for important advances, such as state-of-the-art telemedicine, remote diagnosis, health and patient data exchange, research, and records compliance.”

In addition to paving the way for telemedicine, the upgraded fiber network will allow independent physicians to begin using electronic health records. Organizations looking to apply for an award can find application information on the BTOP website.

The United States is not alone in its efforts to expand broadband internet into rural areas as a means of improving access to telemedicine. The British are looking to close the gap as well, [A href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/07/15/vaizey_bb/"]The Register[/A] reports.
