The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT is consolidating 17 offices down to 10 that will report to the National Coordinator for Health IT, Karen DeSalvo, M.D. and Deputy National Coordinator Jacob Reider, M.D. DeSalvo unveiled the realignment plan to ONC employees at an all-staff meeting on Wednesday, May 28th.

“We have spent the last few months seeking input from the senior team, from prior leaders of ONC, and reviewing prior organizational structures and efforts,” DeSalvo wrote in an email to ONC staff. “This realignment will support our focus on developing and implementing an interoperability roadmap, supporting care transformation, and establishing a framework to support appropriate use of health data to further meaningful consumer engagement.”

The changes were made now, at least in part, because “the HITECH Act’s health IT infrastructure and program investments are ending and it is our responsibility to take this opportunity to reshape our agency,” DeSalvo wrote. The HITECH Act informs policy around the ONC’s EHR incentive program for eligible providers and eligible hospitals meeting meaningful use criteria. Beginning in 2011, eligible providers were able to attest to meaningful use and receive incentive payments given out over a five-year period.

The new ONC departments that will report to DeSalvo and Deputy National Coordinator Jacob Reider, M.D., are:

  • Office of Clinical Quality and Safety
  • Office of Planning, Evaluation, and Analysis
  • Office of Standards and Technology
  • Office of Programs
  • Office of Public Affairs and Communications
  • Office of the Chief Operating Officer
  • Office of the Chief Privacy Officer
  • Office of Policy,
  • Office of Care Transformation.
  • Office of the Chief Scientist
