The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has announced it is modifying its Program Information Management Systems (PIMS) to accommodate the release of notifications of privacy breaches. Under the HITECH Act, organizations covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) must provide information about privacy and security breaches that affect more than 500 people.

The office, which is part of the Department of Health & Human Services, said in a Federal Register notice that PIMS will collect and maintain that information and that the OCR will publish the information about HIPAA-covered entities when such breaches occur.

The OCR has been gathering information about breach notifications since the more stringent HIPAA laws went into effect late last year.
