New Zealand-based Orion Health Ltd. has acquired hospital information system assets from Microsoft, including the product previously known as Amalga HIS.

Amalga HIS disappeared in July 2010 with little apparent fanfare — the product’s primary customer base, Southeast Asia, is a long way from Microsoft’s Redmond, Wash. headquarters, and the U.S. health IT market has plenty of other offerings.

However, Orion Health sees value in the system. According to Healthcare IT News, the company plans to bundle Amalga HIS with radiology information system (RIS) and picture archiving and communication system (PACS) technology that it has also acquired from Microsoft and market the whole shebang as a health process management suite. Orion Health says that should pair nicely with the company’s data integration and clinical workflow systems.

Microsoft and Orion Health will also co-market their respective Amalga Unified Intelligence System (UIS) and health information exchange technology to public and private HIE organizations and large integrated delivery networks.

Amalga UIS, it should be noted, remains in Microsoft’s hands. Orion Health has only acquired Amalga HIS and related assets. Terms of the deal, which should be finalized by January 2012, have not been disclosed.
